Our goal is to equip learners with a nationally-recognised qualification to enhance their career progression. This course would suit those working or would like to work, in the Retail sector and want to improve on their skills, perhaps to prepare for another qualification or a role which exposes them to more responsibilities.

This course in retail will equip you with the skills to sell, provide service, work in teams, understand health and safety, deal with theft, and develop product knowledge to effectively serve the needs of customers. Whether you are already employed within the retail field, or are looking at retail as a future career path, the qualification will provide essential knowledge and understanding in all generic areas.

With retail knowledge you will:

  • Receive training in ‘bite-sized chunk’ to suit your individual needs.
  • Receive a qualification accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

Entry Criteria:

There are no formal entry requirements, however learners are required to possess the basic standards of English, Mathematics, and Information Communication Technology skills required to undertake this qualification.

The Retail Knowledge is a classroom taught pathway achieved by gathering a range of evidence. This pathway is for those learners who do not have any prior customer service experience who wish to undertake the qualification in a classroom based setting. The qualification consists of 4 mandatory units and optional units shown below:

Mandatory Units

  • Understanding customer service in the retail sector
  • Understand the retail selling process
  • Understand how individuals and teams contribute to the effectiveness of a retail business
  • Understand how a retail business maintains health and safety on its premises
Optional Units

  • Understanding the handling of customer payment in a retail business
  • Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock in retail business


A variety of teaching and learning methods are employed throughout the programme in order to ensure the acquisition and development of the appropriate knowledge, understanding, skills, and competences necessary to achieve the learning outcomes. These will be experienced during classroom sessions interspersed with workshops, small group events, and individual practical activities together with structured exercises and discussions.

Learners will be guided and directed to areas of research and appropriate background reading in order to complete the required assignments.
